Auto-Rickshaw Driver Arrested for Murder of Arjuna Awardee DSP in Jalandhar

Jalandhar, An auto-rickshaw driver in Jalandhar, Punjab, has been arrested for the murder of Arjuna awardee and Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Dalbir Singh. The arrest follows the discovery of DSP Singh’s body near a canal on the outskirts of Jalandhar.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the incident occurred after a scuffle between DSP Singh and the auto-rickshaw driver, identified as Vijay Kumar, over a ride home. DSP Singh’s body, which bore multiple injuries including a bullet wound to the head, was found abandoned near Basti Bawa Khel. Passers-by, upon finding the body and recognizing the identity through his ID card, alerted the police.

The investigation revealed that DSP Dalbir Singh had left his home with three acquaintances and was later dropped near the bus stand late at night, after which he went missing until his body was discovered. The police, led by Commissioner Swapan Sharma, held a press conference to announce the arrest of the main suspect, Vijay Kumar.

Commissioner Sharma stated that the accused, a known drug addict who had previously been in rehabilitation, was intoxicated on the night of the incident. The altercation over dropping DSP Singh home escalated, leading to the shooting. The DSP’s service revolver and bullets were recovered from Kumar.

The Arjuna Award, officially known as Arjuna Awards for Outstanding Performance in Sports and Games, is one of India’s most prestigious sports honors, ranking just below the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. DSP Singh, an awardee, was a distinguished figure in Indian sports and law enforcement.
