Islamabad: The Government of Australia has agreed to fund a significant water management project in Pakistan, committing AUD 3 million towards developing climate-resilient water allocation systems. The Memorandum of Subsidiary Agreement was signed by Dr. Kazim Niaz, Secretary of Economic Affairs, and Prof. Wendy Umberger, Chief Executive of the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), following endorsement from Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Cheema.
According to Press Information Department, this research initiative aims to improve the reliability of canal water by enhancing water allocation decisions and practices. The project, set to complete by 2029, focuses on updating the Water Apportionment Accord Tool, integrating mid-season planning, and exploring on-farm water storage solutions. These efforts are designed to achieve climate resilience, adaptive management, and equitable water use, ultimately benefiting Pakistan’s farming communities economically and socially.
