Assam University Event Sparks Controversy with Depiction of Muslims

Dispur, An event at Bodoland University in Assam has drawn severe criticism for portraying Muslims as criminals during a cultural procession, a representation that has ignited discussions on bigotry and intolerance in educational settings.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the incident occurred during the university’s 23rd varsity week and Thulunga Festival, hosted by the Department of History. A video from the event, which quickly gained traction online, depicted individuals in Muslim garb being mistreated in a staged act, an image that many found offensive and discriminatory.

The Muslim Student Union of Assam (MSUA), alongside several other student and community organizations, has vocally condemned the university’s actions, questioning the intent and educational value of such a portrayal in a diverse society. This controversy comes against a backdrop of increasing communal tensions in Assam, where the chief minister has faced accusations of bias against minorities. The incident at Bodoland University underscores the broader challenges of combating stereotypes and promoting inclusivity in India’s northeastern states.
