Assam-Mizoram border clash depicts mistrust among Indian forces

Islamabad, August 07, 2021 (PPI-OT):The recent clash between the police of the Indian states of Assam and Mizoram depicts the extreme level of mistrust and lack of coordination among the Indian forces. A report released by Kashmir Media Service, today, maintained that at least 6 policemen from Assam were killed and 80 others injured when police from the two states fired at each other. It said that bullets, teargas canisters and grenades were fired on July 26 during the clash at a disputed border point between Assam and Mizoram.

The report said violence between the two north-eastern Indian states follows months of tensions over a long-running border dispute. “Clashes between Assam and Mizoram have occurred in the past as well, with the first dating back to 1994. Longstanding border dispute between Assam and Mizoram dates back to the colonial era,” it said.

The report said the scale of the recent deadly clash was unprecedented and surprised even the residents. “Although violence has stopped but situation at the Assam-Mizoram border continues to be tense and unpredictable. An atmosphere of anxiety, fear and lack of faith in a peaceful resolution has descended on both Assam and Mizoram,” it added.

The report pointed out that Chief Ministers of Assam and Mizoram blamed each other for inciting violence at the contentious border point. The bloodiest clash ever between Assam and Mizoram is a major embarrassment for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as he and his party BJP are currently dominant force in north-eastern part of India, it said.
