Assam Implements Comprehensive Ban on Public Beef Consumption

New Delhi: The Indian state of Assam has enacted a comprehensive ban on the consumption and serving of beef in public spaces, including restaurants, hotels, and community events. The decision, spearheaded by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), marks a significant expansion of existing restrictions that previously limited beef consumption within a five-kilometer radius around temples.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the ban was finalized during a state Cabinet meeting and announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Sarma communicated the decision on the social media platform X, highlighting the broader scope of the new regulations. Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika supported the ban, challenging the opposition Congress to either support the decision or “settle in Pakistan.”

The ban follows accusations from Congress leaders who alleged that the BJP distributed beef to influence voters in Samaguri, a Muslim-majority constituency, during recent by-elections. In response, Sarma invited Congress to formally request the ban, which has now been implemented.

The policy is part of a broader campaign by Sarma to enforce stricter dietary and cultural regulations in Assam. This move also builds on previous measures that prohibited cow slaughter. Critics have expressed concerns about the ban, citing Assam’s diverse population and varying dietary practices across communities.
