Srinagar, August 24, 2021 (PPI-OT): In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, as all the jails are overcrowded, the authorities have declared three buildings as subsidiary jails in the territory. A local news agency Kashmir News Observer (KNO) claimed that it has accessed some documents which show that the IIOJK administration has declared three buildings – two in south Kashmir and one in north Kashmir – as subsidiary jails. On 29 July 2021, IIOJK’s Home Department issued three separate notifications to declare an equal number of buildings as subsidiary jails under The Prisoners Act-1900.
According to the documents, the Home Department has declared a building of Boys Pahari Hostel Kupwara in North Kashmir as subsidiary jail. Similarly, the department has also declared a building situated at Armed Police complex, Kehribal, Mattan, in Islamabad district of South Kashmir as subsidiary jail. The documents further reveal that a building within the premises of police station Kulgam in South Kashmir has also been declared as subsidiary jail. It is worth mentioning here that jails in IIOJK, especially in the Kashmir Valley are overcrowded.
