Apache Attack Helicopter Incident in Ladakh Amid India’s Gagan Shakti Exercise

New Delhi, An Apache attack helicopter, one of the most advanced combat helicopters provided to India by the United States, made a hard landing in Ladakh during an operational sortie for the Gagan Shakti exercise, marking the first major mishap involving these helicopters since their induction about four years ago.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the incident, which occurred near the strategically significant Khardung La in Ladakh, resulted in minor injuries for the two pilots onboard. They were promptly evacuated to the nearest air base. The Indian Air Force (IAF) attributed the helicopter’s damage to the challenging terrain and high altitude conditions of Ladakh, necessitating what was described as a “precautionary landing.”

The IAF has initiated a court of inquiry to determine the exact cause of the accident. This event follows a series of Apache helicopter accidents experienced by the US Army, including a recent crash near Fort Carson, Colorado, on March 27, which led to the temporary grounding of their Apache fleet for thorough inspections.

Details regarding the extent of the damage to the helicopter involved in the Ladakh incident and its potential for salvage remain undisclosed by the IAF. India acquired 22 Apache helicopters as part of a strategic Rs 13,952 crore deal with the US, signed in September 2015, aimed at bolstering its air combat capabilities.
