Another centuries old mosque on Modi regime’s radar for possible demolition

Varanasi, July 24, 2023 (PPI-OT): On a purely Hindutva way of making ancient mosques controversial and then demolish them like what happened to Babri Masjid in Ayodhya at the hands of Bharatiya Janata Party and its patron organization RSS, the Modi regime has planned to demolish another century old, Gyanvapi mosque, constructed by Aurangzeb in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India, in 1669. A team of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has arrived in Varansasi to conduct a so-called survey “to determine if Gyanvapi mosque is built upon a temple”. District Magistrate S Rajalingam said, “We have been intimated by the ASI that the survey will begin on Monday.”

Advocate of the Hindu side Madan Mohan Yadav said the ASI team had reached Varanasi and would start the survey of the Gyanvapi complex at around 7 am on Monday. He said an advocate of each petitioner would accompany the survey team.

District judge AK Vishvesh on Friday directed the ASI to conduct a detailed survey – including excavations, wherever necessary – to determine if the mosque is built upon a temple. The mosque’s ‘wazukhana’, where a structure claimed by Hindu litigants to be a ‘Shivling’ exists, will not be part of the survey, following an earlier Supreme Court order protecting that spot in the complex. The judge directed the ASI to submit a report to the court by August 4, along with videos and photographs of survey proceedings.
