Amid flood threat, Srinagar admin asks staff to be ready

Srinagar, July 20, 2021 (PPI-OT):In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, the Srinagar administration has directed several of its departments to make “necessary preparedness and mobilize their resources and field staff on a war footing” in view of a warning regarding moderate to heavy flooding in the territory.

The directions were issued following a weather advisory issued by the Indian Meteorological Department that had warned of heavy rain at most places in Jammu and Kashmir during this week and also raised the possibility of flash floods.

Mohammad Aijaz, Chairman of District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), directed all concerned departments including the Irrigation and Flood Control, Public Health Engineering (PHE), Roads and Buildings (RandB), Power Development Department (PDD) and Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) to make the necessary preparations.

“Irrigation and Flood Control, PHE, RandB, PDD and SMC shall make all necessary preparedness and mobilize their resources/ field staff on a war footing basis without any further delay,” the advisory read.

The DDMA Chairman said the weather system “may most likely result in moderate to high risk floods” and also cause temporary disruption of surface traffic, water logging and minor floods over the low lying areas and landslides and shooting stones at vulnerable places.

The DDMA has further advised all tehsildars and other field agencies to inform the general public about the precaution to be taken.

“Also, population residing along river banks must be warned for a Flash Flood like situation,” advised Aijaz.

IIOJK is likely to receive a very high volume of precipitation over the next two days. Several parts of the region, including several districts of Jammu division, have already received heavy rainfall
