Washington: Ambassador Rizwan Saeed Sheikh welcomed a delegation from the National Defence University (NDU) to the Embassy of Pakistan on Monday, underscoring the enduring partnership between Pakistan and the United States. The delegation, consisting of senior civilian and military officers, recently concluded their National Security and War Course.
Accompanied by representatives from the Near East South Asia Center for Strategic Studies, the delegation was congratulated by Ambassador Sheikh for completing the leadership program aimed at preparing them for advanced roles.
Ambassador Sheikh highlighted the historical ties initiated by a letter from President Truman to Pakistan’s founder in 1947. He emphasized Pakistan’s strategic importance, noting its significant population growth projections.
Reflecting on bilateral relations, Ambassador Sheikh pointed out the alliance’s resilience over seven decades, acknowledging Pakistan’s efforts in fighting terrorism and managing climate change impacts, such as the 2022 floods.
Economically, the Ambassador noted that the U.S. is Pakistan’s largest trading partner, with potential for growth in sectors like minerals and agriculture.
Discussing regional tensions, Ambassador Sheikh praised U.S. mediation in recent conflicts with India but warned of the fragile nature of the ceasefire. He called for continued international involvement to address the Jammu and Kashmir issue and reaffirmed commitment to the Indus Water Treaty.
The Ambassador proposed a strategic partnership with the U.S., emphasizing mutual interests and Pakistan’s regional role. He cited Pakistan’s youthful population and technological capabilities as future cooperation opportunities.
The session allowed the NDU delegation to gain insight into Pakistan’s global and regional perspectives, highlighting the need for ongoing dialogue between the two nations.
