Ambassador Munir Akram Introduces Draft Resolution on Self-Determination at UN

Islamabad, Mr. Munir Akram, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United Nations, introduced a draft resolution entitled “Universal Realization of the Right of Peoples to Self Determination” under Agenda Item 70 in the Third Committee on November 16, 2023. The resolution, contained in document A/C.3/78/L.62, emphasizes the foundational role of self-determination in the framework of human rights and fundamental freedoms.

According to Pakistan Mission to the United Nations, Ambassador Akram underscored the significance of the right to self-determination, as enshrined in the UN Charter and various human rights conventions, declarations, and resolutions. He noted that this right has been a cornerstone for former colonies and subjugated peoples in achieving independence, yet it remains denied in some situations of foreign occupation and intervention.

The Ambassador highlighted the oppressive methods employed by occupying powers to suppress self-determination movements, including military force and human rights violations. He expressed hope for the resolution’s adoption by consensus, reflecting the global commitment to the principle of self-determination. Ambassador Akram also thanked the cross-regional co-sponsors and urged other members to support the resolution.
