Islamabad, June 30, 2022 (PPI-OT):Amarnath Yatra, has become a militarized pilgrimage since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) attained power in India. Since the rise of Hindutva politics in India, the numbers of Yatris to Amarnath Cave in south Kashmir has rapidly increased and the Kashmiris have to deal with increased militarization during the period of Yatra.
It brings more misery to the Kashmiri people in the form of constant checking and frisking and it has serious environmental impacts for the occupied territory. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is ignoring threats that the huge Amarnath Yatra poses to IIOJK’s fragile environment and his decision to allow lakhs of Hindus to visit the Amarnath Cave is an environmental disaster in the making in IIOJK.
Modi must de-militarise Amarnath Yatra, reduce the number of pilgrims and address environmental concerns for a better and safer Yatra. As many as 40,000 additional paramilitary forces have been deployed in the occupied valley. Drone cameras hover over the pilgrim routes. The 43-day Yatra will end on 11 August 2022.
