Allahabad, May 13, 2023 (PPI-OT):The High Court in the Indian city of Allahabad has directed the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to carry out a ‘scientific survey’ of the ‘Shivling’ in Gyanvapi mosque in the Varanasi city of the India state of Uttar Pradesh to ascertain its age. Five Hindu women had sought worship in the mosque claiming that it was built on a Hindu temple. The Hindus also claimed the presence of Shivling (an idol depicting the Hindu deity Shiva) in the ablution water tank. However, the Muslims maintained that the alleged Shivling is part of a fountain in the ablution water tank.
A single bench of Justice Arvind Kumar Mishra passed the directions while responding to a petition filed by the Hindu side, demanding carbon dating of the ‘Shivling’. Instead of going through the submission of the Muslim side, the biased court asked the ASI to conduct the carbon dating of the structure and ensure that no damage is done to it during the survey. The court upturned the district judge’s decision in this regard. The ASI had submitted its report in a sealed envelope on Thursday.
