AJK to Celebrate Its 76th Founding Day Amid Renewed Calls for Kashmiri Freedom

Mirpur, The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) government is gearing up to mark its 76th Founding Day on October 24, Tuesday. The commemoration serves as a dual celebration of the region’s historical emancipation from the Dogra rule and a reiteration of commitment to the Kashmiri freedom struggle.

According to a news release by Kashmir Media Service, this year’s observance holds particular significance, coming on the heels of India’s controversial action four years ago on August 5. India had then revoked the special status of the internationally-recognized disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir, removing Articles 370 and 35-A from its constitution. This move openly contradicted United Nations Resolutions on Kashmir, which advocate for the region’s right to self-determination through a fair and impartial plebiscite.

Historically, the Founding Day marks the formation of the AJK government, which took place on October 24, 1947. This establishment followed the successful liberation of AJK territory from India-backed Dogra governance by local freedom fighters.

Chairman District National Events Organizing Committee and Deputy unveiled the planned festivities during a media briefing on Sunday. Special ceremonies will be hosted across all ten districts of AJK, where speakers will shed light on the day’s historical importance. Special prayers and Fateha for Kashmiri martyrs will also be part of the events, underlining hopes for the success of the Jammu and Kashmir freedom movement and the overall welfare of the AJK State.

The recent surge in pro-freedom sentiments and demonstrations against India in occupied Jammu and Kashmir, coupled with decades-long oppression by Indian forces, has brought the AJK government’s founding anniversary into sharper focus. Organizers emphasized the event’s goal to amplify the Kashmir freedom movement on a global platform and to express unwavering support for those in occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

The day will commence with special prayers, not only wishing for the success of the Kashmir freedom movement but also praying for the stability and prosperity of Pakistan, which many in Jammu and Kashmir regard as their eventual homeland.
