AG Noorani, Esteemed Constitutional Lawyer and Kashmir Expert, Dies at 94


Mumbai: AG Noorani, a preeminent constitutional lawyer, author, and commentator on the Kashmir dispute, has died at his residence in Mumbai at the age of 94. Known for his incisive legal scholarship and commentary, Noorani’s extensive work on Kashmiri rights and history shaped much of the current understanding of the region’s legal issues.



According to Kashmir Media Service, Noorani, born on September 16, 1930, was a pivotal figure in Indian and Kashmiri intellectual circles, contributing foundational texts such as The Kashmir Question and Article 370: A Constitutional History of Jammu and Kashmir. His commitment to justice and meticulous research won him accolades and respect internationally.



Noorani’s influence extended beyond academia into political realms, frequently advising leaders in both India and Kashmir. In Srinagar, APHC leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq mourned Noorani’s passing, reflecting on his personal relationship with the scholar and his critical advice on political and legal challenges facing Kashmir. Farooq lauded Noorani as a vital supporter of Kashmiri self-determination and a stalwart advocate for the rights of its people.
