Activists Protest Sponsorship by Adani Group at London Science Museum

London, The opening of a new gallery at the London Science Museum, sponsored by Indian conglomerate Gautam Adani’s Green Energy, has prompted protests from climate activists, the South Asia Solidarity Group, and pro-Palestinian organizations. The demonstrators have accused the museum and Adani of using the sponsorship to ‘greenwash’ environmentally detrimental activities.

According to Kashmir Media Service, over 150 protestors occupied the museum, expressing disapproval of the institution’s decision to accept sponsorship from Adani, known for his close ties to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his extensive coal mining and arms export operations. The Energy Revolution exhibit, now named the Adani Green Energy Gallery, is intended to highlight the role of renewable energy in combating climate change.

Protesters emphasized their opposition by displaying a banner portraying Adivasi women resisting Adani’s industrial activities in India, alleging that his company is involved in the displacement of indigenous communities and is complicit in warfare through its affiliation with Israeli arms manufacturer Elbit Systems.

Mukti Shah of the South Asia Solidarity Group criticized the Science Museum for engaging with Adani, asserting that the sponsorship serves to obscure the conglomerate’s involvement in human rights violations and environmental destruction. The protest also featured masks of political leaders and the museum’s director, signaling the perceived collusion in harmful policies and practices.

The controversy centers on Gautam Adani’s ascent in the business world, which critics argue has been facilitated by his relationship with Prime Minister Modi, amid concerns of cronyism and rapid acquisition of strategic assets in India.
