Islamabad: Acting President Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani emphasized the urgent need for persistent efforts and steadfast determination to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) during his speech at the 27th Sustainable Development Conference. As the chief guest, he highlighted the impact of climate change as a significant barrier to achieving these goals in Pakistan.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Acting President pointed out the challenges posed by climate change and stressed the importance of reinforcing governance frameworks to ensure transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in efforts towards sustainability. He praised the simultaneous Sustainability Investment Expo 2024 for its role in displaying advanced technology, promoting collaboration, and drawing investments.
Gillani noted Pakistan’s alignment of its Vision 2025 with the SDGs to underscore its dedication to achieving sustainable development outcomes that enhance human well-being broadly. He proudly mentioned that Pakistan’s parliament has set a precedent by being the first to transition to solar energy and by integrating the SDGs into the national development agenda.
Romina Khurshid Alam, Coordinator to Prime Minister on Climate Change, also spoke at the event, underscoring the government’s commitment to a resilient future guided by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. She detailed initiatives aimed at cutting plastic pollution, boosting recycling, and fostering sustainable alternatives to bolster community resilience.
