Ace footballer Ozil speaks up for Indian Muslims

New Delhi, April 29, 2022 (PPI-OT):Star footballer from Germany Mesut Ozil, has expressed concern over the situation of Muslims in India calling it “shameful” as he urged people to pray for their safety and wellbeing on the Islamic holy night of Lailat-al-Qadr.

“Praying during the holy night of Lailat-al-Qadr for the safety and well-being of our Muslim brothers and sisters in India. Let’s spread awareness to this shameful situation!” Ozil tweeted with hashtag #BreakTheSilence and asked, “What is happening to the human rights in the so-called largest democracy in the world?”

Ozil, an ace midfielder who has played for Real Madrid and Arsenal previously, is currently associated with Fenerbahce, a Turkish club. Best known for his performance in the 2014 World Cup that helped Germany clinch the title, Ozil has quite often made statements on issues concerning Muslims around the world.

Earlier this month, the global football icon in a veiled attack called out Western hypocrisy on Ukraine as he posted a tweet urging his fans to pray for peace in the world – “not just in Ukraine, but also in Palestine, Syria, Yemen, Iraq and all other places in the world where people are suffering from war.”

Ozil’s comments on the situation of Indian Muslims came at a time when physical attacks and intemperate hate speeches targeting Muslims have seen a spike in recent weeks. Hindu mobs marched into Muslim localities in several places in the country during Ram Navmi and Hunuman Jyanti raising provocative slogans sparking riots.

In the aftermath of each bout of violence and arson, the Indian government’s response was no less brutal and lopsided heavily loaded against Muslim victims. In some cases, the authorities bulldozed the properties of innocent Muslims while letting culprits off.
