Islamabad, May 08, 2023 (PPI-OT): Speakers, deputy speakers, international jurists, parliamentary delegations, minorities, civil society and media representatives of more than 17 countries, women, youth and people from other walks of life will participate in the international convention.
Themed “My Constitution – Guarantee of my Freedoms”, the convention will consist of opening and closing sessions, plenaries and breakout sessions where the delegates participating in the convention will express their views on the topics of international constitutional and legal principles.
Islamabad: 8 May 2023; The International Constitutional Convention will be held on May 10 and 11, 2023 to mark the Golden Jubilee of the Constitution of Pakistan, hosted by the National Assembly of Pakistan. Speakers, deputy speakers, prominent political leaders, legal experts and scholars, civil society, socio-political women activists, youth and media representatives and people from other walks of life will participate in the convention.
On the special invitation of Speaker National Assembly Raja Pervez Ashraf, the Saudi parliamentary delegation headed by the Chairman of the Majlis Shura of Saudi Arabia will participate, while the parliamentary delegations of prominent countries like Sri Lanka, Azerbaijan, Belgium, the Republic of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan will be accompanied by the respective Deputy Speakers/Chairmen.
In addition, the United Republic of Tanzania, Kenya, Oman and Iran will be represented by the chairpersons of their respective committees, in addition to the parliamentarians of Pakistani origin residing in the United States and the United Kingdom will also participate in the convention. Leaders, Senators, Members of Parliament, Federal Ministers, Chief Ministers and seasoned politicians will attend.
This event was organized by the National Assembly under the chairmanship of Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf in connection with the Golden Jubilee of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan which came into effect on April 10, 1973 under the visionary leadership of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. The closing ceremony is the document of the Constitution of Pakistan which is a demonstration of unity, consistency and perseverance of Pakistan.
A breakout session will be held under the chairmanship of the Global Responsibility and Multilateral Framework for Climate Justice and a case study on Pakistan floods in 2022. The last session of the first day will be chaired by Information and Broadcasting Minister Ms. Maryam Aurangzeb, in which the delegates will give their views on the topics of “balancing executive, legislative and judicial functions, ensuring separation of powers”.
On the second day, the convention will begin with a summary of the first day’s proceedings. Later, there will be a plenary session on “Constitution in the Age of Crisis, Navigating Challenges” presided over by Mohsin Shah Nawaz Ranjha, Member National Assembly.
The meeting will examine how the constitution can cope with challenges arising from crises such as epidemics, natural calamities and political unrest. On the same day, three breakout sessions will also be held simultaneously on various constitutional issues. Breakout Session I which will be chaired by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja will focus on the protection, implementation and challenges of fundamental rights and the Constitution.
Breakout Session – II Ms. Shazia Marri, Minister for Poverty Alleviation and It will be held under the heading of Social Security which includes “Constitution and Courts, Interpretation of Constitution, Protection of Rights and Freedoms”.
The third breakout session will be held under the chairmanship of Syed Mustafa Mehmood, in which the topic of “Constitution and Economic Justice” will be discussed. The second day will conclude with the theme of building exclusive and equal societies, challenges and opportunities under the chairmanship of speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf. Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will deliver the keynote address at the convention, in which the role of the Constitution in building inclusive and equal societies will be expressed.
The Convention will conclude with the adoption of a Recommendation-Based Document that will set guidelines for further action to enhance cooperation among participating States.
Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf will participate in the convention and meet the speakers, deputy speakers and parliamentary delegations of different countries. The role of parliaments for regional development and prosperity will be considered in the meetings.
