Lahore, April 14, 2023 (PPI-OT): A meeting related to prison reforms was held in the Chief Minister’s Office under the chairmanship of caretaker Chief Minister Punjab Mohsin Naqvi. In the meeting, suggestions regarding the trial of prisoners in jails were reviewed through video link.
Caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi has directed to make final recommendations regarding the video link trial of prisoners in jails and has called for a report in this regard. In the meeting, it was decided in principle to allow the prisoners to perform Fajr and Maghrib prayers in congregation. The meeting was told that 71 prisoners will be released before Eid-ul-Fitr by paying the dowry and fine etc.
Philanthropists and the Punjab government will pay the dowry and fines of indigent prisoners. In the meeting, it was decided in principle to provide video call facilities for prisoners in Punjab jails. The pilot project of video call will be started in Lahore jail within 7 days will be established and training courses will be given to prisoners in 10 more prisons.
During the briefing, the participants of the meeting were told that the installation of CCTV cameras has been completed in 28 prisons across the province, while in 15 more prisons, CCTV cameras have been installed. CTV cameras will be installed.
A control room will be activated in the IG office for 24/7 monitoring. During the briefing, it was further informed that there will be no need to bring the prisoners to the court due to the video link trial in the jail. It was informed in the briefing that open air gyms have been established in 9 prisons of Punjab and open-air gyms will be built in other prisons as well.
Medical equipment worth Rs 40 crore will be purchased for prison hospitals. Additional Chief Secretary Home, Secretary Finance, IG Jails. Chairman Punjab Information Technology Board and concerned officials attended the meeting.
