Islamabad: In a development following the promulgation of punishments to those convicted in the 9th May Tragedy, 67 individuals have exercised their right to appeal for mercy or remission of their sentences. Of these, 19 convicts have been granted remission based on humanitarian grounds, as per legal provisions, while 48 petitions are currently being processed in the Courts of Appeal.

According to Inter Services Public Relations, the names of those whose sentences have been remitted include Muhammad Ayaz, Sami Ullah, Laeeq Ahmed, and 16 others. Their release will proceed upon the completion of necessary procedural formalities. All convicted individuals retain the right to appeal and access other legal remedies available under the law and constitution.

The remission of sentences reflects the legal system’s commitment to due process and fairness, balancing justice with principles of compassion and mercy. This follows a similar action earlier in April 2024, when 20 convicts were released on humanitarian grounds. The remaining mercy petitions will be decided in due course, adhering to the established legal process.
