600 madaris closed, 300 more to be shut in Assam: CM Himanta Biswa

Assam, May 19, 2023 (PPI-OT): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma restated his commitment to intensify the crackdown on madaris (Islamic seminaries) in the state. Himanta Biswa Sarma, a leader of Bharatiya Janata Party, said that the state government would close 300 more madrasas in the coming days.

Earlier, addressing a party rally in Belagavi city of the Karnataka state ahead of the Assembly elections in March, he said, “I have closed 600 madaris and I intend to close all madaris because we do not want madaris. We want schools, colleges and universities.” As of January 2023, Assam has a total of 3,000 madaris, including both registered and unregistered ones.

The inclusion of madrasa education in the Assam education curriculum dates back to 1934 when it was introduced, and concurrently, the State Madrasa Board was established.
