Birmingham, A recently released report discloses that a substantial 40% of the sitting Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) in Madhya Pradesh, India, find themselves embroiled in criminal cases. This translates to 93 out of the total 230 MLAs currently in office.
According to a news release by Kashmir Media Service, the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) in collaboration with Madhya Pradesh Election Watch undertook an analytical examination of the criminal, financial, and other background aspects related to all 230 sitting MLAs. As per the findings, “47 MLAs (20%) face serious criminal charges”. Furthermore, the report points to a single sitting MLA having murder charges under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. An alarming disclosure also indicates six MLAs having cases related to attempted murder under IPC Section 307.
Additionally, the report draws attention to charges related to crimes against women, noting declarations under IPC Section-354 by a number of MLAs. Breaking it down further, out of the total MLAs facing criminal charges, 39 belong to the BJP, 52 are from Congress, one from BSP, and one of three Independent MLAs.
These findings are released as Madhya Pradesh readies itself for the upcoming Assembly polls, scheduled for November 17, with the vote counting set for December 3.
