34 Years Later, Gaw Kadal Massacre Victims Still Await Justice

Islamabad, Decades after the Gaw Kadal massacre in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), justice remains elusive for its victims. This event, which occurred 34 years ago, witnessed a tragic loss of life when Indian troops opened fire on peaceful protesters.

According to Kashmir Media Service, a report released today details the events of January 21, 1990, in the Gaw Kadal area of Srinagar. Indian troops fired indiscriminately on demonstrators who were protesting the molestation of several women by the troops the previous night. The report states that over 50 people were martyred in this incident.

The report further highlights that since 1989, Indian troops have been responsible for numerous brutal massacres in IIOJK, resulting in the deaths of over 96,287 Kashmiris in the past 35 years. These incidents, including the Gaw Kadal massacre, remain vivid in the collective memory of the Kashmiri people. The report suggests that these mass killings were part of a strategy to instill fear among the Kashmiri population and to alter the demographic composition of the territory, shifting its Muslim majority to a minority.

The document criticizes the current Indian regime, backed by the RSS, for perpetuating violence and oppression in IIOJK, including plans for more massacres akin to Gaw Kadal. The report condemns the actions of Prime Minister Modi’s government, accusing it of committing unprecedented atrocities in the region.

Despite these challenges, the report emphasizes that such acts of violence will not deter the Kashmiris from their struggle for self-determination and freedom from Indian control.

The Kashmir Media Service calls on international human rights organizations to investigate the massacres committed by Indian troops in IIOJK. It urges the global community to play a role in bringing those responsible for the Gaw Kadal and other massacres to justice, presenting these cases as a challenge to the international community’s commitment to human rights and justice.

In remembrance of the massacre’s 34th anniversary, the All Parties Hurriyat Conference Azad Jammu and Kashmir (APHC-AJK), including notable figures like Convener Mehmood Ahmad Saghar and General Secretary Sheikh Abdul Mateen, paid tributes to the martyrs of the Gaw Kadal massacre.
