3 million Indian WhatsApp accounts banned from June 16-July 31

New Delhi, September 01, 2021 (PPI-OT):Messaging platform WhatsApp has said that it banned over three million Indian accounts in India during the 46-day period from June 16 to July 31, 2021. The Whatsapp in a report said that in the “interest of preventing online abuse and keeping users safe” on the platform, it took action against Indian accounts through its “prevention and detection method for violating the laws of India or WhatsApp’s Terms of Service”. It said overall, over 95 per cent of such bans in India were due to the unauthorised use of automated or bulk messaging (spam).

“WhatsApp is an industry leader in preventing abuse, among end-to-end encrypted messaging services. Over the years, we have consistently invested in Artificial Intelligence and other state of the art technology, data scientists and experts, and in processes, in order to keep our users safe on our platform,” a WhatsApp spokesperson said.

This is the second such report by instant messaging platform following the introduction of IT Rules 2021 by the Modi government. In its first compliance report, which covered the time between May 15 and June 15, WhatsApp had said it banned 2 million Indian users.
