Sindh CM Pushes for Swift Progress on Rs 71.8 Billion K-IV Water Project

Karachi: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has ordered the expedited execution of the K-IV Augmentation Project, a critical initiative aimed at alleviating Karachi’s persistent water scarcity issues. During a meeting at the CM House, Shah expressed concern over a recent water line burst at Karachi University and directed immediate repairs to prevent further disruptions.

The meeting, attended by key officials including Energy Minister Nasir Shah and Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, highlighted the need for a comprehensive survey of aging water lines. Shah mandated the water board to develop a five-year plan for their repair or replacement, emphasizing the necessity of a robust water supply system.

The K-IV Augmentation Project, part of the Greater Karachi Bulk Water Supply Scheme, holds strategic importance in addressing the city’s water challenges. Shah urged swift removal of administrative hurdles and instructed the Local Government Department to fast-track the tendering process. He also called for the acquisition of necessary No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to commence construction within the next three months.

Funded by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), the World Bank, and the Sindh government, the project includes multiple packages covering key transmission routes across Karachi. An international Austrian firm finalized the project’s design, and the bid documents are being updated by the supervision consultant.

The process for hiring a Construction Supervision Consultant (CSC) has progressed, with the World Bank approving the Technical Evaluation Report. Following the clearance of a No Objection Letter, the contract is expected to be signed by May 2025.

Efforts to secure NOCs from various agencies are underway, with approvals already obtained from seven entities. Chief Minister Shah reaffirmed his commitment to delivering the K-IV Augmentation Project, ensuring access to clean drinking water for Karachi’s expanding population.
