Guwahati: Congress Member of Parliament Raqeebul Husain, along with his personal security officer, was assaulted by masked individuals in Assam’s Nagaon district, raising concerns over the security of political figures in the region.
According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, the incident occurred while MP Husain was traveling to a party meeting. The assailants, armed with cricket bats, left both Husain and his security officer injured in what has been described as a violent attack.
The attack has prompted the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Bhupen Bora to voice strong criticism of the state government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Bora condemned the incident as a failure of the Chief Minister and state law enforcement agencies.
“If the police fail to take action against the attackers, we will be forced to accept that Assam is under a jungle raj,” Bora stated. He accused the ruling BJP of using police forces as a political instrument and criticized the state government’s inaction in past incidents involving violence against Congress members.
Bora has demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible for the attack on Husain and emphasized the need for improved protection for political leaders. “We cannot allow the continued targeting of Congress leaders without consequence,” he said.
Raqeebul Husain is a significant figure in Assam politics, having served as a five-time Member of the Legislative Assembly before securing the Dhubri Lok Sabha seat with a substantial margin last year.
