Hindutva Groups Target Muslim Women with AI-Generated Images on Social Media

New Delhi: Hindutva groups have been using social media to distribute AI-generated semi-pornographic images and videos targeting Muslim women, according to a report from Kashmir Media Service. The report, published by The Quint, highlights the use of platforms such as Instagram and Facebook to post images of women in hijab or burqa in intimate positions with Hindu men.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the report by journalist Adity Menon uncovers the existence of at least 250 Instagram pages using AI tools to create these images. On Facebook, the activity is concentrated on fewer pages but with substantial followings. The visual content often emphasizes the ‘Muslimness’ of women through traditional garments, while the ‘Hinduness’ of the men is depicted with religious symbols and clothing.

The report further details that these social media pages frequently use the term ‘Hijabi’ in their names and hashtags, making it clear that their target is the Muslim identity. The images are often accompanied by derogatory comments, suggesting that Muslim women wear burqas to hide sexual frustration.

Nabiya Khan, a Delhi-based poet and activist who faced a similar situation with ‘Sulli deals’ in 2021, reported receiving such images in private messages on X. She expressed concerns over threats to morph her images, reflecting on the contradictory behavior of those who publicly oppose hijabs but privately fetishize them.

This report sheds light on the ongoing online harassment faced by Muslim women, raising questions about the intersection of digital technology and social media in targeting minority communities.
