Energy Committee Reviews New Integrated Policy and Urges Action on Vacancies

Islamabad: The Standing Committee on Energy (Power Division) convened its 7th meeting at the Parliament House to discuss the newly approved Integrated Energy Policy and address pressing issues within the power sector. Chaired by Mr. Muhammad Idrees, the meeting confirmed the minutes of the previous session and included attendance from the Federal Minister for Power Division.

The meeting highlighted the recent approval of the Integrated Energy Policy by the Prime Minister, with the plan set to guide electricity generation in Pakistan over the next ten years. The policy aims to streamline electricity procurement, reduce costs, and improve efficiency by transitioning to a competitive mechanism for procuring 7,000 MW, potentially saving Rs. 1,953 billion. The Minister emphasized the potential reduction of over Rs. 4,000 billion in expenditures over eight years.

Operational concerns were also discussed, notably the vacancy of approximately 80,000 positions in power companies. The Minister sought the Committee’s recommendations to address this issue. Efforts to curb electricity theft and improve billing accuracy through smart meters were also mentioned.

The Committee addressed a Calling Attention Notice about the collapse of K-Electric’s system during monsoon rains, which was resolved after a briefing. Discussions on electricity rate disparities were deferred due to the absent mover. The meeting also postponed discussions on the performance of HESCO and SEPCO Boards.

A briefing from the National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (NEECA) outlined load curves and policy strategies. The Committee urged action on filling vacant positions and assessing defective meters, particularly in Islamabad.

The meeting saw participation from several MNAs and senior officers from the Ministry of Power Division.
